Luke and Lydia's Birth Story

I have been trying to get this post done for the last 7 weeks. I am writing this down more for myself then for anyone else.
Luke and Lydia
 March 25, 2014
It was a Tuesday morning, I had been up most of the night with contractions every 2-3 minutes. I wish I could say that this was an encouraging sign, but this had been going on for the last 7 weeks. I had a Dr. appointment and a Non-stress test that morning, so I wasn't too concerned that my contractions were getting a tiny bit more painful.
I went in for my appointment thinking of all the things I needed to get done for the week. I had an induction date set for March 31, so I knew the end was in sight. You have to understand that I used to work for my Dr as her MA before I went to radiology school, so I knew all of the things that could/should happen. The MA (Christina) came in and took my blood pressure, and then took it again. it was 140's over 90's. I know this is a little high, but wasn't too worried.
Dr. Ponder (Sam) came in and asked me how I was doing. She then told me my bp was high and I was protein in my urine and was 37 weeks with twins. I know what this means, pre-eclampsia.  She said, "How about having some babies today". Of course I said "yes". I was shocked, scared and excited all at the same time. I was sent away with presents and so many well wishes from all of the "Gyno Girls". I knew I would be taken care of and looked after. Labor and delivery wasn't quit ready for me to go straight down, so I went and got some lunch and called Adam. I told him he had an hour to get to the hospital, because it was baby time.
I got to L&D around 11 and was hooked up and started on pitocin by noon. Adam got to the hospital not too long after and the wait started. I wasn't in very much pain and knew we would have a lot of waiting to do being a first time momma and all. Around 2 Dr. P came in to break my water. I was about a 2 1/2 and doing really good. Note to self, next time make sure you have an epidural before letting them do this. I nurse came in and asked if I wanted to be put on the list for epidurals when the anesthesiologist was done with his c-section. I didn't think I would need one by then, but said "yes" anyway. The hour I waited for him was the worst hour of my life. Hats off to you women who have more than an hour of labor without pain meds. Lucky for me, his c-section was canceled. The epidural was by far the best part so far. I was on cloud nine and was ready to kiss the ground that man walked on.
After my epidural, my contractions started to stall out and I was stuck at a 6 for a few hours. This let me get a little bit of rest and chat with my sisters for some encouragement. The nurse came in and checked me again, with no change. Baby A (Luke) head was facing the wrong way, so I was put in a few different position to try to get him to rotate. The nurse came back in 45 min later to check me again, and I was at anterior lip.
Dr P then came in to see if she could get the little mister to turn. She turned him and he would just go right back. She turned him again and had me do a little practise push to see if I could move me a little so he would stay put. With that push she told be she could see his brown hair, and had the nurse get the OR ready for us. I was not ready to be to this point yet. Holy cow, my babies were ready to make their debut.
I was wheeled to the OR (around 7pm) while Adam was putting on his "bunny suit" and would meet me in there. My Dr is a little superstitious and made me move over to the OR table, just incase a c-section was needed. Adam came in was I made him sit down, I didn't need him passing out while I was trying to birth these babies. The only thing that was on my mind at this time was how bad my heartburn was and all I wanted was a big glass of water. Pretty lame that this was my biggest motivator in getting these babes out.
I started pushing and realised very quickly that my epidural was wearing off. I thought I could power through it, and was reminded that I still had another baby and a repair to get through. I anesthesiologist came in and gave some more "magic" and I was ready to go. I had the best cheerleaders for nurses. They helped keep me motivated and encouraged. Mister Luke came into the world at 7:34 pm weighing 5lb 15oz and 19in long and screaming. I was able to cut his cord since Adam didn't want to. He was rushed into the other room to be assessed and cleaned up. I could hear him exercising his lungs and knew he was just fine.
It was time to get my little Lydia out to joined her brother. She was breach and tried to come out with one hand and one foot. They had to push her back up and grab her little feet. The nurses were reminding me the whole time, that her head was going to be the last thing to come out, so I needed to push like nobodies business. Miss Lydia came into the world at 7:37 as quiet as could be weighing 5lb 8oz and 19in long . They put her on my chest and then took her to the NICU team waiting. I was watching and waiting for her to cry, and never heard anything. I wasn't too concerned because I could see everything they were doing for her. I finally asked if she was ok, and they said she was great, just content and quiet.
I couldn't believe that my two little miracle were here and healthy at 37 weeks. I was shaking so bad that I didn't dare hold my precious babies. The nurse had to help me. I left to OR, back to my room holding them both and thinking that I didn't even know who was who.
Adam's parents and brother were in the waiting room and came in after the had fed both of them. It was such a surreal experience. I realized that 1-I hadn't even told anyone Luke and Lydia were here and safe yet and 2- That I didn't even have a picture to sent to my family. I had Adam snap a quick picture and sent it to everyone I could remember. I was so out of it that I got the babies mixed up in the message. I was wheeled up to the postpartum floor not even knowing which baby was which.
The rest of our stay was pretty uneventful. I had some issues with high BP. Lydia had a little trouble regulating her glucose, but it was resolved pretty quickly. Luke had a hard time learning how to suck, but eventually caught on. The babies slept in our hospital room most of the time. Adam finally convinced me to sent them to the nursery at 2am one night.
I was discharged after 2 days, but the babies had to stay an extra day because they hadn't had a regular eating schedule and hadn't had any wet diapers. I wish I would have been told that they needed to eat every 3 hours instead of just letting them feed on demand. I think this would have resolved the problem. I was a mess and couldn't imagine leaving them at the hospital without me, so I was able to do a "hotel stay" after I was discharged. We were all able to go home on friday and finally get settled into our "new normal".
Let me just say that the last 7 weeks have been trial by fire. I am so grateful for these two sweet babies and couldn't ask for anything different. It seems like everyday is a learning experience. I just have to remember that we are all learning and figuring things out together.
Adams parents put together this cute little video that captures the events of the day.

36 weeks

How far along? 36 weeks measuring 45
Total weight gain: 36 (Pre-pregnancy weight 136lbs, lost 3 lbs so 133 at my first app)
Maternity clothes: I am down to very few clothing items that still fit. Most of the time my belly is hanging out of whatever shirt I have on.
Stretch marks? It seems like I am getting more and more everyday.
Sleep: I had 4-5 days of really good sleep this week. It makes such a difference if I can stay in bed until at least 5, even if I do get up every hour for a bathroom trip.
Best moment this week: I had my last baby shower on Sat and it was so much fun. We had a great turn out and I was feeling all of the love. My sisters and mom were able to make the trip up also. They sprung me from bed rest a few days early to go do some last minute things. We went to breakfast, got pedicures and finished getting everything for the babies. I am feeling like I am ready as I will every be for these two munchkins to make their appearance. Oh, the best part is, no more bed rest. I am a free women!
Miss Anything? At this point, what don't I miss.
Movement:They are still movers and shakers at this point. I really don't know how they can even move at this point.
Food cravings: Milk! I can't get enough. I go through a gallon at least once a week, which is a big deal for me.
Anything making you queasy or sick: I still have a hard time eating anything I've cooked or meat. Other than that, I don’t have much else that bothers me.
Gender: Boy and Girl
Labor Signs: It seems like my contractions are less frequent now that I have stopped the Nifedipine. I'm praying these two don't get too comfortable in there. I haven't had much of a change since I was put on bed rest. I'm still about 1 1/2 cm and 80%. I do have an induction set for March 31, if they don't come before then. I have also started to get a lot of swelling in my feet. My right foot/ankle is about double the size of my left. I had an u/s to make sure there wasn't a blood clot hiding in there, and as I suspected it was clean. For now i just have one poofy foot and one elephant leg.
Belly Button in or out? Definitely out, and then some.
Wedding rings on or off? I have to say it’s off.
Happy or Moody: I think my mood depends on how well I have slept and how much my body hurts. I have had a few days where I am just over being pregnant. I am trying to keep a good attitude, but some days it is incredibly hard.
Looking forward to: I can't wait for little Luke and Lydia to make their debut. I don't know what I'm more nervous about, labor or actually having them here. I only hope that we catch on to the learning curve quickly.

35

How far along? 35 weeks measuring 44
Total weight gain: 33 (Pre-pregnancy weight 136lbs, lost 3 lbs so 133 at my first app)
Maternity clothes: Mostly my wardrobe revolves around sweats and whatever tee-shirts I can still fit into. I do get dressed up for Dr. Appointments which is the only time I leave the house. I have also found that regular shoes are not my friend. My feet look like sausages if I try to wear them.
Stretch marks? It seems like I am getting more and more everyday.
Sleep: What is sleep? This is an ever changing thing.
Best moment this week:  I had my last growth scan this week. Let me tell you, these babies are getting big. Luke weighed in at 4lb 12oz, and Lydia at 4lb 14oz. They had a really hard time measuring Luke's head because he is so low. These are just estimates at this point, but they make this mama happy. I also had a new nephew born this week and was able to see him yesterday. Nothing better than a sweet baby.
Miss Anything? At this point, what don't I miss,
Movement:They are still movers and shakers at this point.
Labor Signs: I am still having contractions regularly, but they are not as intense as before though.
Belly Button in or out? Definitely out, and then some.
Wedding rings on or off? I have to say it’s off.
Happy or Moody: I am starting to get a little more grumpy, probably because I waddle, my body aches and I am getting restless on bedrest. I am trying to be good company though! Honestly, things really aren't too bad.
Looking forward to: My last week of bed rest. I also have another baby shower this weekend. My mom and 2 of my sisters are flying out, so these babies better behave until then. I still need to finish the final touches in the nursery, but the basics are all ready to go.

34 weeks

How far along? 34 weeks!
Total weight gain: 30 (Pre-pregnancy weight 136lbs, lost 3 lbs so 133 at my first app)
I was hoping I was going to squeak by without them. No such luck. Bring on the twin skin!
Sleep: What is sleep? I have been getting reflux when I go to bed this week. I finally get comfortable just in time to roll my baby Shamoo body out of bed to go to the bathroom. I usually get up around 3-4 am and make my way to the couch until I can fall asleep again.
Best moment this week:  We've hit a major benchmark this week. Next goal is to hit 36 weeks and then they can make their big debut.
Miss Anything? At this point I am starting to miss a lot. I would say, not feeling like a beached whale is one thing I definitely miss. I also miss being able to lift up my own legs to put socks, shoes or even pants on.
Movement: I feel like they move more now than ever. They were both going crazy a few nights ago for a few hours. I found out that it was Miss Lydia turning her little self head down. Good girl! Mom appreciates this very much.
Labor Signs: I am still having regular contractions. They are around 8 min apart most of the time. They haven't changed too much in the past week, so I haven't been too worried about them. My Dr did up my dose of Nifedipine again, just for safe measure (She will be out of town for 10 days, so they can't come until March 17th).
Belly Button in or out? Definitely out, and then some.
Wedding rings on or off? I have to say it’s off.
Happy or Moody most of the time: I am starting to get a little more grumpy, probably because I waddle, my body aches and I am getting restless on bedrest. I am trying to be good company though! Honestly, things really aren't too bad.
Looking forward to: getting the nursery ready. Right now it is a mess. Adam has been moving the upstairs office downstairs. I’m hoping to have it cleared out this weekend.

33 week

How far along? 33 weeks measuring
Total weight gain: 27 (Pre-pregnancy weight 136lbs, lost 3 lbs so 133 at my first app)
Maternity clothes: Mostly my wardrobe revolves around sweats and whatever tee-shirts I can still fit into. I do get dressed up for Dr. Appointments which is the only time I leave the house.
Stretch marks? I was hoping I was going to squeak by without them. No such luck. Bring on the twin skin!
Sleep: I’ve had a harder time falling asleep this week. I think I am hitting the “uncomfortable” stage of pregnancy. One I fall asleep, I am up every 1 ½ -2 hours.
Best moment this week:  Nothing too exciting has happened this week. I always love to see them at my weekly Dr app.
Miss Anything? At this point I am starting to miss a lot. I would say, not feeling like a beached whale is one thing I definitely miss. I also miss being able to lift up my own legs to put socks, shoes or even pants on.
Movement: The last few days they have been wiggly.  Miss Lydia decided she wasn't happy where she was and decided to flip. Now she is breach and loves sticking her head in my ribs, silly girl.
Food cravings: Smoothies are my newest craving this week. I only wish they would deliver. I guarantee I would keep them in business if they delivered.
Anything making you queasy or sick: I still have a hard time eating anything I've cooked or meat. Other than that, I don’t have much else that bothers me.
Gender: Boy and Girl
Labor Signs: Not too many this week. My contractions have calmed down the past week. I was having them every 2-3 min at my NST yesterday, but I’m just blaming that on the Dr stirring things up.
Belly Button in or out? Definitely out, and then some.
Wedding rings on or off? I have to say it’s off. I tried to wear it yesterday, and after a few hours I knew it was time to put it away until I adjust back to non-pregnant life.
Happy or Moody most of the time: I have definitely been emotional this week, It seems like tears are always threatening to spill over for no reason. I would say that I am still happy most of the time.
Looking forward to: getting the nursery ready. Right now it is a mess. Adam has been moving the upstairs office downstairs. I’m hoping to have it cleared out this weekend.

32 week update

How far along? 32 weeks measuring 41 ½-42 weeks
Total weight gain: 25 (Pre-pregnancy weight 136lbs, lost 3 lbs so 133 at my first app)
Maternity clothes: Mostly my wardrobe revolves around sweats and whatever tee-shirts I can still fit into. I do get dressed up for Dr. Appointments which is the only time I leave the house.
Stretch marks? Went to bed without them, and BAM! Woke up the next morning with 7 or 8 on my belly. It makes me wonder what these 2 were up to in the night.
Sleep: It seem like this is an ever changing deal. This week, I got to bed between 7-9 and get up every 2 hours for a bathroom break. Then I am usually up around 3-4 for a few hours until I fall back asleep on the couch
Best moment this week:
Miss Anything? I am having a hard time letting Adam do everything for me. I’m learning to let the housework go and let someone else take care of it. I do miss fresh air. I am cooping pretty well after 2 weeks of bedrest, but I do miss being able to go outside or for a car ride.
Movement: The last few days they have been wiggly.  Miss Lydia decided she wasn't happy where she was and decided to flip. Now she is breach and loves sticking her head in my ribs, silly girl.
Food cravings: I still don’t crave too many things, but every few weeks I do enjoy an Oreo shake!
Anything making you queasy or sick: I still have a hard time eating anything I've cooked or meat. Other than that, I don’t have much else that bothers me.
Gender: Boy and Girl
Labor Signs: I have started getting more contractions, which are stronger and much more noticeable. Luckily they haven’t been causing any changes. My Dr. did up my Nifedipine, so hopefully that will take care of them.
Symptoms: Heartburn seems to have taken a backseat. I only get it occasionally (thank goodness). My hips and back are starting to get a little agitated if I lay on one side for too long. They are definitely taking the brunt of my every growing belly.
Belly Button in or out? Definitely out, and then some.
Wedding rings on or off? On and off. Some days I can wear it all day and others it’s tight by the end of the night.
Happy or Moody most of the time: It has been a crazy week trying to get my non-FMLA taken care of and having to apply for ADA and a bunch of other things, so I have been a little more emotional this week for sure.

Looking forward to: Finishing up crocheting the receiving blankets I made and getting a few other things ready for the babies.

31 weeks

How far along? 31 weeks measuring 39 weeks
Total weight gain: 24 (Pre-pregnancy weight 136lbs, lost 3 lbs so 133 at my first appt)
Maternity clothes: Mostly my wardrobe revolves around sweats and whatever tee-shirts I can still fit into. I do get dressed up for Dr. Appointments or if I am leaving the house.
Stretch marks? 1 or 2 tiny ones
Sleep: It seem like this is an ever changing deal. This week, I got to bed between 7-9 and get up every 2 hours for a bathroom break. Then I am usually up around 3-4 for a few hours until I fall back asleep on the couch. The medication I’m taking to keep my contractions at bay causes really bad headaches. I take it every 6 hours, so around 9pm and 3am. This is part of the reason for my crazy sleep schedule.
Best moment this week:  Getting out of the house for my very first baby shower. It was so fun so get together with family and friends, and also get some much needed baby stuff.
Miss Anything? I am having a hard time letting Adam do everything for me. I’m learning to let the housework go and let someone else take care of it.
Movement: I am starting to feel less movement, but I can see it more. I think they are starting to get settled into one place.
Food cravings: I still don’t crave too many things, but every few weeks I do enjoy an oreo shake!
Anything making you queasy or sick: I still have a hard time eating anything I've cooked or meat. Other than that, I don’t have much else that bothers me.
Gender: Boy and Girl
Labor Signs: This week everything is looking good. My contractions are few and far between (as far as I can tell). Everything looked really good at my appointment. No change in dilation, still at 1 ½ cm and 70%. My FFN (fetal fibronectin) did come back positive this time, which doesn’t mean much. If it’s negative it means I won’t go into labor in the next 2 weeks. If it’s positive it doesn’t really tell us anything.
Babies also both looked really good at their growth scan. They are both in the 40%, which is awesome. Luke weighed in at 3lb and 9oz, and Lydia was 3lb 7oz. Their positions are looking good for a vaginal delivery.
Symptoms: I am getting heartburn when I go to bed, 2 tums and I’m all better! I am also starting to get swelling in my feet and legs if I don’t keep them elevated.
Belly Button in or out? Definitely out
Wedding rings on or off? On and off. Some days I can wear it all day and others it’s tight by the end of the night.
Happy or Moody most of the time: As long as things don’t go too crazy than I am happy. If you start throwing wrenches in my day than the water works threaten to show.

Looking forward to: Getting a few more sewing projects done. I still need to finish their carseat covers. I also need to finish getting my bag packed, just in case I need it sooner than later. I am getting excited and nervous for these two to arrive!
